Must every Christian have to be in ministry? Find out here

Must every Christian have to be in ministry? Find out here

Rev. Edward Sarkodie of the Watered Garden Church, has disclosed that it is important for all Christians to be in ministry.

He simply defined the word ministry as service or work to God.

“Ministry just has to do with the work of God or the service of God so anything done to advance God’s agenda on earth is called ministry” he explained.

He stated that it is also a specific assignment that Jesus has begun and has handed over to us as his children to continue on his behalf.

Answering whether or not preaching the word of God can be referred to as being in ministry, he told Paul Anomah Kordieh in an interview on e.TV Ghana’s Christian Connect he said, “That should be the ultimate goal because if you read Ephesians 4 it talks about all the ministries which say they are to equip the saints so they do the work of the ministry”.

He furthered that in the book of 2 Corinthians 5, the scripture talks about the ministry of reconciliation where God expects us to bring the world to him through his word.

“He calls it the ministry of reconciliation which means, reconciling the world to Christ so that becomes the work of the ministry,” he said.

Rev Edward disclosed that every believer irrespective of what service they are into or involved in has to be in the primary or general ministry.

Dumsor has destroyed all my home appliances

Dumsor has destroyed all my home appliances

Otumfuo Osei Tutu has lamented the devastating impact power outages in the Ashanti region is having on his home appliances.

“For about three weeks to a month now, I know my son (Energy Minister) has been doing a lot of work, but I was there one time when there was a sudden cut of power, I try to rest and the power goes off, all my appliances have been destroyed,” the Ashanti Monarch told Energy Minister Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh paid a courtesy call on him at his palace Wednesday.

The Energy Minister however explained to Otumfuo the cause of the erratic power situation and assured him the Ministry is working to resolve it before the end of the year.

“We are working assiduously on the GRIDCo lines that have fallen. We cannot lie to you, we are asking you to support us with your prayer and love, I have nowhere to go, I won’t sit idle for power in Kumasi to be toyed with. We have just encountered difficulty, but soon, it will all be resolved.”

Meanwhile, GRIDco has explained power challenge is as a result of ongoing works on three damaged towers of GRIDCo at Bogoso.

Speaking at a joint press conference organized by GRIDCo and ECG in Kumasi, the Director of Northern Network Services at GRIDCo, Ing. Vincent Boachie, said they are currently working on their 330kV Aboadze to Kumasi transmission lines at Bogoso, which were damaged by a communication tower.

Ashanti region since November 9th 2021 has been sleeping in darkness during the peak hours that’s 6 pm to 11 pm each night.

Ghana working towards comprehensive, universal social protection program – Chief of Staff — Starr Fm

Ghana working towards comprehensive, universal social protection program – Chief of Staff — Starr Fm

The Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei Opare says Ghana is steadily working towards a comprehensive and universal social protection programme which is a requisite safeguard and a pedal to accelerate sustainable development.

According to her, this would guarantee that as much as possible, all members of society irrespective of age, gender, ethnicity, geographical location, education, disability and status in society to live dignified lives.

Speaking at the 2021 UG ALUMNI LECTURE, at Legon, under the theme:” SOCIAL PROTECTION IN GHANA: ARE WE ON TRACK?” she noted that most importantly, it is the fundamental understanding of government that the most effective way of tackling poverty is to break the chain that passes it from one generation to the next and the systematic way of doing so is through education.

“Moreover, lessons from other countries’ social protection initiatives have underscored the relevance and the need to ensure sustained exit from poverty. It has been observed that provision of social assistance alone without the necessary skills for income generation does not provide a sustained exit from poverty,” she noted.

Madam  Osei Opare added “In view of this, Government of Ghana has created pathways into the livelihoods programmes that are more sustainable towards economic growth and inclusive national development. Productive Inclusion has therefore been adopted as one of the effective and more sustainable means of addressing extreme poverty and vulnerability. Since 2020, under the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project (GPSNP) Ghana is rolling out Productive Inclusion strategy to provide and support graduated beneficiaries of LEAP to engage in more productive livelihood activities.”

Meanwhile, the Chief of Staff has urged the Gender, Children, and Social Protection Ministry to organize a national social protection dialogue to identify sustainable financing mechanisms and to unlock innovative ideas to tighten the delivery of Ghana’s social protection agenda so that nobody is left out.

She’s confident such a national dialogue will also generate stakeholder commitment and explore sustainable public-private partnerships.

Court withdraws bench warrant for Sosu — Starr Fm

Court withdraws bench warrant for Sosu — Starr Fm

The Kaneshie District Court in Accra has rescinded a bench warrant issued on Monday, November 29, 2021, for the ɑrrɛst of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu.

A statement issued from the MP’s office disclosed that the plea accepted follows the attendance of Francis-Xavier Sosu to the Court on December 1, 2021.

The Madina MP was accompanied by the Minority Leader, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Former Deputy Attorney General, Hon. Dominic Ayine, Former Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon Nii Lantey Vanderpuye.

Other colleagues of the MP present at the court also include Former Deputy Interior Minister and Ranking Member for Defence and Interior Committee, Hon James Agalga, Former Tourism Minister, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare. Other Members of Parliament that accompanied him were Hon. Mahama Ayariga and Hon. Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui.

The case has been adjourned to January 12, 2022.

Background

The Kaneshie District Court in Accra has issued a bench warrant for the ɑrrɛst of Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina Francis-Xavier Sosu.

The legislator who has been a subject matter of criminal charges was absent in court for the third consecutive time.

In court on Monday, November 29, when the case was called his lawyer Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu said, his client is on the Constitutional and Legal Committee of Parliament and they are sitting on the Anti-Gay bill.

According to counsel, Sosu is a ranking member of that Committee and with that exercise coming up this morning, means he is on Parliamentary duty.

Prosecution led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sylvester Asare argued that the conduct of the MP is clear that he does not want to appear before the court.

Relying on Sections 167 of Act 30, ASP Asare prayed the court to issue a bench warrant for the ɑrrɛst of the lawmaker.

The court presided over by His Worship Oheneba Kuffour while granting the request for the bench warrant said there has been too much “deception” in the system.

Court Correspondent Murtala Inusah reports that one Rahman, was in court to represent lawyer Sosu, but the court said, in criminal matters, accused persons are to be present in court.

The case has been adjourned to January 12, 2022.

New Times Corporation launches Road Safety Campaign — Starr Fm

New Times Corporation launches Road Safety Campaign — Starr Fm

The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority, Ing. May Obiri-Yeboah has warned drivers against abandoning their faulty vehicles on the road beyond two hours.

According to her, the action is backed by the constitution and anyone who is found guilty will be punished.

The NRSA boss was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the New Times Corporation, NRSA, and Ghana Police Service’s newly launched road safety campaign dubbed ‘Preserving lives, sustaining our nation’, today Wednesday December 1,2021.

She told the media “it is a breach of the law and anyone who leaves or fixes their cars in the middle of the road should be arrɛsted by the police. The law states that within one or two hours it must be taken away from the middle of the road to prevent accidents. This action is taking charge from today because it is already backed by the constitution and anyone who is found guilty will be punished. If you don’t have the towing truck then call the police service.”

She also advised transport services to make sure there are two drivers in every bus travelling for 500km or more to reduce the rate of road accidents this Christmas and New Year season.

“We are using this medium to tell them that the law is requesting that when you are travelling 500km or more you need two drivers in the bus”, she said.

Also speaking at the event, DCOP Martin Aryee stated that the police will support the media in any way possible to fulfil this campaign.

He also cautioned road users to renew their road certification a month before it expires because if anyone is caught on the road with even a day old expired road certificate, they will be arrɛsted. He added that the cameras on the roads are still working so everyone should be cautious of their actions on the road.

“Please do not wait till your road certificate expires before you renew it. The law says you can do it within the last month to the expiring of the certificate so that when you are arrɛsted you don’t say it was just yesterday or this morning.”

“I’m sure you are aware the cameras have been capturing the things you do on the road. I desire to appeal to you not to be caught up in that way because when you think the policeman is not there, the camera is the policeman and that policeman will see you”.ion.

The launch was attended by the Deputy Chief of Police, Martin Aryee, Director General of the National Road Safety Authority, Ing. May Obiri-Yeboah, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Richard Nyarko, Managing Director of New Times Corporation, Mr. Martin Adu- Owusu and other dignitaries.

According to statistics, road accidents increased by ten percent this year. From January to October 2021, Ghana recorded 13,242 road accidents. Greater Accra and Ashanti recorded 65% of all car accidents and 72% of all motor accidents nationwide this year.

Is it possible to detect if someone is heartbroken? Find out here:

Is it possible to detect if someone is heartbroken? Find out here:

Harry Boo, a professional nail technician, has talked about whether or not it is possible for one to determine if someone is going through a heartbreak phase.

Heartbreak, as she explained it, is the feeling that one gets when someone they are in a romantic relationship with decides to quit or leave the relationship. This, she said, is the general definition that people usually give to heartbreak, however, she believes there is more to it and it is not only limited to romantic relationships.

“Sometimes, just a friend can give you a heartbreak without you necessarily being in a relationship with them. You can put your hope or trust in someone or expect highly to get something but at the end of the day, if you don’t get it, that is also heartbreak”, she said.

Answering the question at hand, she noted that it is going to be very difficult for one to know or figure out if someone is heartbroken because people deal with such situations differently. According to her, even if the person appears unusually sad, there is no way to tell that they are going through a heartbreak unless they actually say so because it could be something else they are sad about.

Using herself as an example, Harry Boo confessed that when she is heartbroken, she takes the time to cry as much as she needs to let out the emotion and once she lets go, she is totally done with whoever caused her that pain.

However, some people prefer to bottle up their pain or resort to several others methods preferable to them, therefore, people only need to check up regularly on their friends so that if they happen to be in any such situation, they are able to help them out of it before they get suicidal.

Suspended NDC Mion Constituency Chairman petitions party’s executives to intervene

Suspended NDC Mion Constituency Chairman petitions party’s executives to intervene

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) suspended constituency chairman for Mion in the Northern Region, Alhaji Abdulai Zakaria, has petitioned the National Executives of the party to intervene.

Alhaji Abdulai Zakaria was suspended on Monday, November 22, 2021, by members of the party for what they described as anti-party behaviour exhibited in the last general elections.

In an interview with Citi News, the spokesperson of the suspended Chairperson, Amadu Hamza, said they are hopeful the functional executive committee at the local level would reconsider its decision.

“We have petitioned the party both at the national and regional level. We need them to reconsider their decision. We are imploring them to consider the successes the party has chalked in the consistency through the Chairman over the years.”

“He is a man of integrity and commands respect in the area. If he is not reinstated, it is going to affect the fortunes of the party. We are hopeful the national executives will consider our petition favourably”.

In April, some members of the NDC filed a petition against the Chairman for anti-party conduct, and behaviour contributing to the NDC’s loss of the Mion seat, with an attached audio recording on which the Chairman was heard encouraging voters to vote against the NDC.

The Chairman was suspended, and the petition was referred to the Northern Regional Disciplinary Committee for hearing.

He has recently been declared ineligible to hold office for two years for breach of Oath of Office as provided in Article 48(8) of the NDC constitution.

Chaos in Parliament over motion to overturn budget approval — Starr Fm

Chaos in Parliament over motion to overturn budget approval — Starr Fm

Parliament is in chaos following the decision by first Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu, to sh00t down a motion by Minority for the rescission on approval of the 2022 Budget.

Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu under the Standing Order 50 (1) moved a motion for the House to overturn approval of the budget by the Majority side of the House on Tuesday 30th November 2021.

The approval was a reversal of rejection of the budget by the Minority-sided House last Friday presided over by speaker Alban Bagbin.

The first Deputy Speaker admitted the motion and seconded by Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga in spite of protest from Majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

Mr. Kyei-Mensah Bonsu questioned whether prior to the approval if they had sought from the speaker per dictates of the standing orders.

The Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu argued the first Deputy Speaker who was presiding on Tuesday breached article 104 of constitution and and order 109 standing orders of parliament.

Haruna added that Joe Osei Owusu committed an illegality by counting himself as part of MPs in the chamber in order to get the mandatory 50% of MPs to reverse the rejection of the budget and subsequently approve same.

Damango MP Samuel Abu Jinapor, Essikado-Ketan MP and former Attorney General Joe Ghartey as well as Majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu all argued the first deputy speaker did not err.

The Suame MP for instance argued the first deputy speaker is not a speaker and thus could partake in decision making.

Former Deputy Attorney General and Bolgatanga East MP, Dr. Dominic Ayine and minority Chief whip and Asawase MP Muntaka Mubarak supported the position of their leader arguing the constitution and standing orders are clear deputy speakers presiding cannot partake in decision making.

Consequently, the first deputy speaker ruled he is not a speaker and thus restrictions on speakers of Parliament do not apply to him in the sense the minority members were arguing.

In the middle of his ruling the Asawase MP Muntaka Mubarak interrupted questioning why the first deputy speaker is ruling on a motion when he ought to put a question for the house to decide.

The development threw the House into a pandemonium with some Minority MPs attempting to snatch the mace away as well as the Speaker’s chair which had been left vacant after the Speaker announced an hour suspension.

While the Minority had full complement of their 137 MPs, four MPs Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Manhyia South and Energy Minister, Augustine Collins Ntim, Offinso North, Henry Quartey, Ayawaso Central and Greater Accra regional minister, Francisca Oteng-Mensah, Kwabre East, on the side of the Majority were absent.

It is believed the development was the reason why the deputy speaker failed to put the question.

The minority has vowed never to allow the first deputy speaker to preside ever again since he declared he’s no speaker.

1st Deputy Speaker throws out Minority’s motion for rescission of 2022 budget approval

1st Deputy Speaker throws out Minority’s motion for rescission of 2022 budget approval

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, has thrown out a motion by the Minority requesting for the approval of the 2022 budget on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, to be set aside.

The request was made by Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, a day after they boycotted proceedings.

He insisted that the processes used for approving the budget on Tuesday were a betrayal of the Standing Orders of Parliament and the 1992 Constitution.

“Mr. Speaker, yesterday [Tuesday], as reported by the votes and proceedings which has been adopted, I’m begging to move that the decision which was taken yesterday [Tuesday] in adopting purportedly a budget statement subject to concessions was unconstitutional and a betrayal of our rules and standing orders and a betrayal of the 1992 constitution.”

But after a lengthy debate on the motion on Wednesday, the First Speaker in his ruling explained that per the Constitution and the Standing Orders of the House, he together with the Second Deputy Speaker are members of Parliament but only assist the Speaker of Parliament when the need arises.

He insisted that he was therefore not wrong in associating himself with the Majority side to approve the 2022 budget.

“I have not heard anything here today [Wednesday] which was not discussed yesterday [Tuesday]. All the arguments today were practically the arguments made yesterday [Tuesday]. There are a few matters which I wish to clarify that first, it must be clear that a Deputy Speaker is not a Speaker. Indeed, article 96(1) of the constitution says, and I quote there shall be two deputy speakers of Parliament who shall be elected from the Members of Parliament and to contrast that to Mr. Speaker is not a Member of Parliament.”

“I am a member of Parliament and the Second Deputy Speaker is a member of Parliament, and our role is to assist the Speaker in managing the house. So any attempts to read and interpret the constitution to include the deputy speakers is a misreading” he said.

But the Minority in parliament disagreed with the Speaker because, according to them, the First Deputy Speaker should have put their motion to a vote instead of passing a ruling himself.

As a result of a heated debate that nearly ended in fisticuffs in the chamber, the Speaker suspended sitting for an hour.

There were minutes of heckling, shoving, and shouting from both sides of the chamber.

Video: I was in Parliament on Tuesday

Video: I was in Parliament on Tuesday

The Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo has maintained she was present in Parliament on Tuesday during the controversial approval of the 2022 budget by the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) side in Parliament.

The North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that the Minority in Parliament is investigating a case of impersonation of the Dome Kwabenya Legislator in Parliament on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, he told the host of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show that the Minority side suspects the lady the Majority side came in with was not the Dome Kwabenya MP.

“Following pictures and videos we are reviewing this morning, it is becoming quite apparent to us that there may be a case of impersonation with regards to the lady who was presented as Adwoa Safo. It’s beginning to appear that she may not be Adwoa Safo,” he said.

Sarah Adwoa Safo, who doubles as the Gender Minister, was granted leave by the President upon her request.

The leave, which she sought for personal reasons, was supposed to have ended on August 31, 2021.

However, it was extended since she was unable to resume and requested an extension.

Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, has been acting in her stead as caretaker MP “until further notice.”

She has since not been seen in Parliament until the Minority alleged that someone said to be her was seen in the House to vote on the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy.

The incident has been greeted with suspicion as a section of the public believes the lady who was seen in the House is not the MP. Instead, they suspect she is a relative of the MP who resembles her.

The Minority Caucus is also raising concerns over the incident, insisting that “she may not be Adwoa Safo.”

Like the Minority in Parliament, some Twitter users believe the Majority did not have the numbers to approve the budget after it was earlier rejected on Friday.

They believe the supposed individual was sent into the Chamber to add up to the number of the Majority, to help them pass the budget.

But the former Deputy Majority Leader of the House speaking on the floor of the House maintains that she was present in Parliament.

“I desire to state on record, Mr. Speaker, this is a House of record and that the former Deputy Majority Leader of this House, I was present yesterday… Mr. Speaker, and to state categorically that I cannot force Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa who is my friend on the other side to dress the way I desire him to dress and that is an insult to womanhood and so those making that noise should withdraw. I thank you, Mr. Speaker.”

I was in Parliament for 2022 budget approval – Adwoa Safo replies Minority — Starr Fm

I was in Parliament for 2022 budget approval – Adwoa Safo replies Minority — Starr Fm

The Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has debunked allegations that she was not present in Parliament on Tuesday 30th November 2022 for the approval of the 2022 budget.

“As a former deputy Majority Leader of this house, I desire to put it on record that I was present in this House yesterday (Tuesday),” she said on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday.

The Minority in Parliament says they have commenced investigations into whether or not the Minister for Gender and Social Protection was present in Parliament on Tuesday 30th November 2022.

According to Minority, they suspect the Dome-Kwabenya MP was not present in the House for the Majority side in approving the already rejected budget by them (the Minority).

The North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who raised the alarm on Wednesday disclosed that the Minority in Parliament is investigating what they describe as a case of impersonation of Dome Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, in Parliament on Tuesday.

He stated that the Minority are reviewing some materials available to them before they proceed on any action.

“Following pictures and videos we are reviewing this morning, it is becoming quite apparent to us that there may be a case of impersonation with regards to the lady who was presented as Adwoa Safo. It’s beginning to appear that she may not be Adwoa Safo,” Ablakwa indicated.

Adding his voice to his colleague in the house on Wednesday, the Minority Chief Whip, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka told the Kwabenya MP that she should wait for their investigations adding that they will make their findings public to the Ghanaian people.

Agric Minister ‘forced’ to wear a tie to be in Parliament for improper dressing

Agric Minister ‘forced’ to wear a tie to be in Parliament for improper dressing

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, was, on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, compelled to wear a tie before being in Parliament amidst a heated debate on parliament’s approval of the 2022 budget statement.

The Minister was seen in the house wearing a suit without a tie to complete his dressing, as the rules of parliament require.

This was brought to the attention of the First Deputy Speaker by the Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Governs Kwami Agbodza.

He thus asked the Speaker to order the Minister to go out and dress properly before coming to the house.

“I can notice on the side of the Majority, a former senior colleague of the house the current Agric Minister is not properly dressed, and I desire you to direct him to get out and come back to the house properly dressed.”

“As it is, he is not properly dressed to be in the chamber. It’s a convention in this house that when you wear a suit, you must add a tie.”

However, NPP Member of Parliament for Okere, Mr. Dan Botwe, disagreed with Mr. Agbodza.

According to him, the request for the Minister to be ordered out is shameful and should be dismissed.

“We stay in Ghana and in Africa, and we always talk about colonialism and neocolonialism. Mr. Speaker, the Speaker of the British Parliament has ruled that a Member of Parliament can enter the house and without wearing a tie.”

“We watch them always ask questions without wearing a tie, and we sit in Ghana and shamefully say that someone isn’t wearing a tie. It’s shameful and you must dismiss it.”

Regardless, the Minority Chief Whip, Mubarak Muntaka, rejected the arguments made by Dan Botwe.

“I am surprised that my friend who is a senior member of this house supported the dressing of the minister, who is improperly dressed.”

The First Deputy Speaker, sitting as the Speaker, agreed with the Adaklu MP and ruled that per the practice of the House, MPs are supposed to wear ties once they wear suits.

He explained further that MPs are only free not to wear ties when they choose to wear African prints.

The Minister subsequently rushed out for a minute to put on a tie and returned to the chamber.

Minority moves motion to set aside approval of 2022 budget

Minority moves motion to set aside approval of 2022 budget

The Minority in Parliament has moved a motion for the House to set aside the approval of the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the Nana Akufo-Addo government.

While making the demand in Parliament on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, asked for a rescission of the decision by the Majority Caucus.

He added that what the Majority Caucus did was a betrayal of the Standing Orders of Parliament and the 1992 Constitution.

“Mr. Speaker yesterday as reported by the votes and proceedings which has been adopted, I’m begging to move that the decision which was taken yesterday in adopting purportedly a budget statement subject to concessions was unconstitutional and a betrayal of our rules and standing orders and a betrayal of the 1992 constitution.”

What happened yesterday?

Parliament under the leadership of First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu, on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, overturned an earlier rejection of the 2022 budget statement through his interpretation of the constitution and the standing orders of Parliament.

The First Deputy Speaker included himself in the total number of MPs in the House before having the motion for the reversal of the rejection of the 2022 Budget moved.

This is despite him serving as the Speaker of Parliament in the absence of Alban Bagbin, who is in Dubai for a medical check-up.

His inclusion pushed the number of the Majority Caucus MPs to 138; one more than the Minority.

This kept the Majority within the remit of standing orders, which stipulate that no question for decision in the House shall be proposed for determination unless there are present in the House not less than one-half of all the Members of the House.

Mr. Owusu then pushed through the motion arguing that Mr. Bagbin, erred in overseeing the rejection of the budget by the Minority side last Friday since there was no clear majority in the House during the proceedings.

Majority engaged in an ‘ego trip’ with forced budget approval

Majority engaged in an ‘ego trip’ with forced budget approval

The Member of Parliament for the Tamale North constituency, Alhassan Suhuyini, believes the Majority in Parliament is only servicing its ego by forcing the approval of the 2022 budget statement.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mr. Suhuyini said the Minority expected the government to present a revised budget to Parliament.

“It is just an ego trip that they are engaged in. Even as they conceded that the budget they presented needs revision, they are unable to do the right thing by resubmitting a revised budget.”

Mr. Suhuyini also said the boycott by the Minority was justified in order not to legitimise the actions of the Majority.

“Our protest wouldn’t have been recognized. We would not have been noticed, but what we would have been doing [if we stayed in the Chamber] would have been to validate attendance.”

“We thought that it was better for us to deny the required number of people who are supposed to be present,” the MP added.

Mr. Suhuyini also feels the actions of the Majority have fractured trust between both sides.

“By their conduct, they have clearly indicated to us that they are not ready to cooperate with us and that they are not ready to work with us to move this country forward.”

“Moving forward, we will have to vote on everything that we could easily compromise on,” he said.

Broadcaster Richard Sky heads to SC over 2022 budget approval impasse — Starr Fm

Broadcaster Richard Sky heads to SC over 2022 budget approval impasse — Starr Fm

Broadcaster, Richard Sky, has caused his lawyers to file two writs at the Supreme Court of Ghana asking the Apex Court to declare proceedings of both 26th November and 30th November 2021 in Parliament as unconstitutional.

The decision by both sides in the House according to Sky violates the laws of the land hence his request for the Apex Court to override them.

“A declaration that upon a true and proper interpretation of article 95(1) 96(I) 104(1) and the spirit of the Constitution 1992 of the Republic of Ghana pertaining to the Speaker incidental independence Speaker and the term ‘Speaker’ applies to any other person including the Deputy Speaker entitled to preside of proceedings to determine any matter in the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana,” a portion of the writ by the Lawyer reads.

The writ has the Attorney General and Minister of Justice (AG) as defendant.

The Majority caucus in Parliament on Tuesday, November 30, approved the 2022 Budget statement after the NDC MPs boycotted proceedings after failing to reach an agreement with the Majority over the status of the budget.

While the Majority insisted the rejection of the budget last Friday was unlawful, the Minority maintains the House followed due process in rejecting it.

Series of meetings to resolve the standoff yielded no results as the majority and the Executive stood their grounds of not presenting a new budget.

All the 137 NDC MPs consequently boycotted today’s sitting without even registering their names in the attendance book.

Starr News sources within the Minority say the move is to stop the majority from using the first deputy speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu to undo a decision taken by parliament with Speaker, Alban Bagbin presiding to reject the budget.

The majority argued the 137 NDC MPs were short of the constitutional mandated half of total number of MPs for decision taking. The decision by the minority is to also ensure the Majority is also left with 137 MPs with the first deputy speaker presiding.

Shut down the National Theatre for renovation

Shut down the National Theatre for renovation

Ghanaian poet and playwright, Chief Moomen, has suggested that the National Theatre should be shut down for renovation.

He said this on the back of Citi TV’s report on the rusty cooling support of the central air conditioning system at the theatre.

Speaking to Ghana Weekend TV during ‘The Matriarch’s Verse’ by Apiorkor at the Kempinski Gold Coast City Hotel, Accra, Chief said the edifice does not befit the status of a national theatre.

According to him, the current condition of the nation’s premier events centre is an embarrassment to the country, especially after the management of the facility took to the international crowdfunding platform, GoFundme, to appeal for funds to repair faulty air-conditioners.

“The National Theatre is a symbol for the nation, so if tourists come and the venue is nothing to write home about, it affects the image of the nation. The whole building must be shut down and renovated to a world-class standard.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=/XOSYWbAlrfE

Chief Moomen also called on the government of Ghana to adopt more creative ways of raising funds to refurbish the facility.

About three weeks ago, the Executive Director of the National Theatre, Amy Appiah Frimpong, called on the public to donate money to help complete work on the cooling towers of the National Theatre.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=/FhpKe7Sos2g

This comes almost a year after she created a GoFundMe account to advance the same cause.

The National Theatre, opened in 1992, was built by the Chinese and offered as a gift to Ghana.

The theatre is governed by the National Theatre Law 1991, PNDC Law 259.

It provides a multi-functional venue for concerts, dance, drama and musical performances, screenplays, exhibitions, and special events.

I’ve abandoned my Nat’l Vice Chairman ambition

I’ve abandoned my Nat’l Vice Chairman ambition

Mr Yaw Boateng Gyan, a former National Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has rescinded his decision to contest the National Vice Chairmanship slot at the next congress.

According to him, he got a cold feet in his ambition to run for the position after the widespread anti-Mahama label on his image in the party.

“I’ve gone through a lot with all sorts of vilification in the party. And these things started when I decided to go for re-election as the party’s National Organizer. It was unfortunate the treatment I had to endure even at the grounds in Kumasi and subsequently at Trade Fair in Accra. The late Dr. Kwabena Adjei if he were to be alive will even bear witness to what I’m saying. The old guards that brought the NDC to power are not respected and we need to end that kind of behaviour before the 2024 elections,” Yaw Boateng Gyan told Bonohene Baffuor Awuah on Ghana Kasa on Kasapa 102.5 fm.

He continued, the 2024 race could be a done-deal for the main opposition NDC, if the party puts its house in order and build structures very well.

In his view, “every candidate is marketable and could win the election for the NDC”, adding that all that matters is to have strong structures.

Mr. Yaw Boateng Gyan was part of the leadership that returned the NDC to power in the 2008 and 2012 elections but lost bitterly to Mr Adams in his bid to seek another term.

Meanwhile, the perceived feud between Yaw Boateng Gyan and ex-president Mahama intensified after the former NDC National Organiser vowed to campaign for Dr. Kwabena Duffuor should he declare his intention to contest for the flagbearer position in the party’s next primaries.

2022 budget approved to prevent unnecessary obstruction of gov’t business

2022 budget approved to prevent unnecessary obstruction of gov’t business

The Member of Parliament for the Dormaa East Constituency in the Bono Region, Mr. Paul Twum Barimah has commended the Majority Caucus for overturning an earlier decision rejecting the 2022 budget statement and subsequently approving the policy document.

Members on the Minority side had thrown out the budget statement last Friday following the walkout by the Majority.

The Minority had claimed the budget was not in the interest of Ghanaians and requested for a revised budget to be tabled before the House.

This decision was short-lived, as the Majority on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, reversed the earlier rejection of the budget statement at a sitting boycotted by the Minority.

Sharing his view on the matter to Citi News, the New Patriotic Party legislator representing the people of Dormaa East said the Majority Caucus did the right thing by not “allowing government business to be distracted.”

“The Majority in Parliament on Tuesday demonstrated our commitment towards the government and the Ghanaian people by quashing the illegality that was perpetrated on Friday by the Minority.”

“We have passed the budget so that government business will not be obstructed unnecessarily. I endorse the decision taken by the Majority by respecting the constitution of Ghana.”

Bagbin erred, budget rejection has no effect – 1st Deputy Speaker

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, on Tuesday declared as null and void Parliament’s rejection of the government’s 2022 budget and economic policy statement.

According to the sit-in Speaker of Parliament, the rejection of the budget statement by 137 minority members was unconstitutional, and that the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, erred in his ruling.

Joseph Osei Owusu based his ruling on Tuesday on Article 104 of the 1992 constitution, which forbids Parliament from taking certain decisions until it has at least half of the number of MPs present in the chamber.

“My attention has been drawn to the record, page 10 of the Votes and Proceedings of Friday, which showed that the confirmed numbers of the Members of Parliament at the time the question was presented was less than half of the Members of Parliament. Records show that 137 members were present. That is less than half of the full Members of Parliament. Article 104 and our standing order clearly spell out the process of decision-making in the house. It clearly states that a question shall not be put on any matter unless at least half of the members are present in Parliament.”

“The Speaker appeared not to have paid attention to the Constitution and procedural provision. I’m certain that given his expertise, he would not have made this error if his attention was drawn to it. The consequence of this unfortunate error is that it is void and inconsequential, since it was done in violation of Article 104 (1) of the constitution,” he said.

Wendy Shay slammed for saying Rocky Dawuni used ‘connection’ to secure Grammy nomination

Wendy Shay slammed for saying Rocky Dawuni used ‘connection’ to secure Grammy nomination

Wendy Shay and Rocky Dawuni

Google search engine

Wendy Shay is under heat for insinuating that two-time Grammy nominee, Rocky Dawuni, secured his Grammy nomination under some dubious means.

In a tweet that sent Ghana Twitter in an uproar, Wendy shay wrote that connection dey pass application which loosely implies that the award scheme is not merit-based.

According to Wendy, filing an application to be nominated is just a mere formality. Adding that, it takes a lot of networking in the music space to be recognized and nominated.

The Rufftown record signee in the tweet pleaded with Rocky Dawuni to direct artists, including herself, steps to take to gain nomination from the Recording Academy.

She wrote in a tweet, “Chairman @RockyDawuni Show us the Grammy way cos connection dey pass application”.

Rocky Dawuni has been nominated in the Best Global Music Album for his ‘Voice of Bunbun’ Vol. 1 at the 64th Grammys. The announcement was made at the official Grammys nomination Livestream ceremony a week ago.

However, social media users disagree with Wendy Shay and feel that proposing that the Grammys is not transparent is an insult to the nominees.

“Hard work pays obaa…Maybe you don’t know @RockyDawuni..Until u start recognizing and revering those who paved the way in the music industry, u will forever remain an area champ.. Burna won it and the whole Africa celebrated him..we didn’t heart its connection but Gh.. daabi da.“

“Arh what do u mean..This is a total disrespect becos u literally mean that he did it by connections not application of his effort @RockyDawuni come see this”

Akuapem Poloo to continue 90-day jail term as court dismisses appeal

Akuapem Poloo to continue 90-day jail term as court dismisses appeal

A social media sensation, Akuapem Poloo, is to go back to the Nsawam Medium Security Prison to complete her 90-day jail sentence.

This follows the dismissal of her appeal against the sentence by the criminal division of the High Court.

Justice Ruby Aryeetey, the presiding Judge, held that the sentence as handed down by an Accra Circuit Court last April was not, on the face of it, excessive and would thus not be interfered with.

“The court will only interfere if the court is convinced that the sentencing is manifestly excessive. The sentence was not manifestly excessive, and this court will not interfere with the court’s sentencing. This appeal is dismissed,” Justice Aryeetey gaveled.

Known in private life as Rosemond Brown, the controversial social media personality landed herself in trouble when she posted nudes of her then 7-year-old son on social media, in an unusual celebratory style.

She was said to have violated the dignity and rights of the son.

Her subsequent 90-day jail term sentence was, however, described by her lawyers as harsh, and thus appealed against it.

But in an apparent defence of the trial court, Justice Aryeetey observed that: “It is apparent on the face of the trial document that the trial judge exercised her discretion judiciously. I am of the view that the trial court considered all the mitigating factors put up by the appellant’s lawyer and in the appeal. The trial judge also considered all the aggravating factors yet imposed the custodial sentence.”

In the considered view of Her Ladyship, “the trial judge imposed a harsh sentence to serve as a deterrent to others from committing the same crime.”

The High Court thus ordered that the child at the centre of the prosecution should be given to another family member who is competent enough to take care of him.

Akuapem Poloo back to jail to complete her 90-day sentence

Akuapem Poloo back to jail to complete her 90-day sentence

An Accra High Court has dismissed an appeal filed by actress Akuapem Poloo born Rosemond Alade Brown which sought to challenge the 90-day jail term handed to her by the Accra Circuit Court on April 16 this year.

Akuapem Poloo was sentenced to 90 days in jail after she posted a nude photo of herself and her son on social media to celebrate his birthday.

The actress’ reason given for posting such a photo was the fact that her son should in the future realize the good work she has done for his development.

However, the picture was seen as an abuse of the young boy’s rights and child rights organizations took up the case and reported her to the police after which she was arraigned before court and sentenced to 90 days in prison.

The actress was granted bail and appealed the decision by the circuit court but the Criminal Division of the court presided over by Justice Ruby Aryeetey upheld the Circuit court decision on grounds that the Circuit court’s decision was not manifestly excessive.

The court ordered that in the absence of the convict, Akuapem Poloo’s child should be given to any competent person in the family to take care of.
